Cold Plunge and Sauna in Canggu: How to Build a Recovery Week That Actually Works

Canggu has, almost by accident, become one of the best places in the world to run a serious weekly recovery practice. Saunas, cold plunges, ocean, sun, and a slow enough pace to actually use them. The mistake most people make is stacking everything into a single hero session — three rounds of sauna, two plunges, a hard surf, all in a morning. The nervous system rewards rhythm, not bravado.

What a working week looks like

Two sauna sessions, twenty minutes each, on different days. Two cold exposures, two to three minutes each, never on the same day as your hardest training session. Two ocean mornings — easy swim or slow surf — early enough to also count as morning light. One full rest day. That is the entire framework. Everything else is taste.

Heat and cold are not interchangeable doses of the same vitamin. Sequence them on purpose.

Heat first, cold rarely after training

Sauna post-training is excellent for cardiovascular adaptation and perceived recovery. Cold immediately post-training, especially after strength work, blunts hypertrophy and adaptation signals — the data here is consistent enough that it should change behaviour. If you lifted in the morning, plunge tomorrow, not tonight.

Where to actually go in Canggu

There are now multiple sauna and cold plunge venues across Canggu, Berawa and Pererenan, ranging from traditional Finnish saunas to infrared studios with built-in cold tubs. Pick one or two close to home — adherence beats novelty. The ocean is the third venue, and the most underused. A twenty-minute easy paddle or swim before 8am does more for a high-output week than most cold sessions.

Who this is for

Endurance athletes, surfers, lifters and high-output founders living between sessions, travel and a tropical climate. If recovery has become an inbox you are not opening, a recovery protocol consult is the cleanest way to design the week you actually have.
